Years ago, before I lived here, I remembered going to kind of a diner place someone told me had good Prime Rib. I went there with a friend of mine and was amazed at the size and quality of the Prime Rib. And the price! This was back in the 80’s, and I could never remember where it was. Then one day I was driving on Las Vegas Blvd., north of down town, and I noticed the big oil derrick, and I thought “you know, that might be that Prime Rib place”. I didn’t have time to stop, but vowed I would come back and check it out.
One day a few months later, my wife and I found ourselves in the area. It was lunch time, we were hungry, so I suggested we try it out. I had a Prime Rib sandwich and it was wonderful. The meat was incredibly tender, and I said “This is the place! I’m sure of it”. OK, now I had to come back for dinner.
Well, last Saturday, we were coming back from Mesquite and decided to stop at Jerry’s for dinner. There it was on the menu: Prime Rib. They have an English Cut (thin slices), the Thick Cut, and the Extra Thick Cut. Now I remembered. I ordered the Thick Cut. It was a full bone cut, about 2 inches. This brought it all back to me, I remembered seeing that Extra Thick cut go by on a cart that time many years ago. It looked like a cinder block made out of meat. The Thick cut was plenty for me. The beef was tender, as tender as any I’ve had at twice the price. You don’t get a lot of choices: soup or salad, baked, mashed or fries, and whatever vegetable they are serving that day. No substitutions. But that’s OK. You get a great piece of Prime Rib for $17.95. If that’s all I got, I’d be happy. The Extra thick cut is twice the size for twice the price if you dare. I’m telling you this is the best deal in town for real quality Prime Rib. The restaurant, Jerry’s Coffee Shop, isn’t fancy. It looks like an old 1960’s diner, but very clean. They make all their desserts on site, bake all their breads on site too. I don’t remember what we paid back in the 80’s, but I remember it was a great value, and it still is.
