Internationally acclaimed singer Gloria Estefan and her husband Emilio will be honored with a star on the Las Vegas Walk of Stars Thursday, April 29.
The free ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. at the Crown Theater inside the Rio.
Estefan was born in Cuba in 1957. When Fidel Castro seized power in 1959 her family fled with her to Miami. She shot to the top of the charts in 1985 with the Miami Sound Machine’s “Conga.”
Since then she has won several Grammy Awards and sold more than 70 million albums.
Years ago – October, 2003 – I had the opportunity to interview her in a suite at Caesars, where she was going to perform in a concert at the Colossium.
I was escorted to the suite. Video cameras were everywhere. She was dressed in a sexy white jumper outfit.
We sat on a deeply cushioned sofa in the middle of the room.
The interview began and almost immediately the suite was plunged into darkness – a tripped circuit turned us all into dark shadows.
I thought my dreams had come true – me on the sofa with Gloria Estafan, in the dark.
I suggested candles, and a bottle of champagne.
“I like you, but not that much,” she said as she rose and left the room until light was restored.
