Matsuri is Japanese for festival or holiday. The 75 minute production currently in the newly renovated showroom in Imperial Palace is a holiday from the usual Las Vegas Productions, and it is a good one suitable for all ages. Even better, there is a fabulous locals special running until May 26th.
Don’t be mislead by the name. Although it is from Japan, there is no foreign language spoken. In fact, there is no dialogue and no plot. It’s all about the stunning visual with gymnastics, dance, and precision routines. The 18 skilled cast members use batons, jump ropes, fans, hula hoops, rings, and mallets. Their energy is amazing. They are jumping, landing, leaping, stomping, clapping, up, down, over, under, all over the stage.
Although there is no dialogue to sing along, you will undoubtedly find yourself clapping in time to some of the energetic routines. There is comedy scattered throughout the show. And an adorable woman in a bird type costume who helps to transition from one unrelated scene to the next.
The routines or acts vary from soft and sensual to hard and fast. There is beautiful synchronized dance and movement from this troupe of talented performers. And there are delightful entertaining moments of magic punctuating the production.
Matsuri is colorful, graceful, fast paced, and keeps its sense of humor and magic. You can take kids or adults of almost any age to enjoy Matsuri. According to Production Stage Manager Ron Guarnieri, this production is not about fancy lighting or production decorations, but rather, “They have talent and energy and get people’s blood flowing.” Ron enjoys the fact that “little kids love it; it keeps their attention, and the senior citizens love it as well. Families don’t have to worry about the content of this production.”
Take the entire family to see Matsuri at the Imperial Palace Showroom at 4 p.m. Saturday through Wednesdays or Fridays at 7 and 9:30 p.m. They are dark on Thursday. Tickets are $70 including tax and tips for VIP or $60 for general admission. However, from now through May 26, locals showing a Nevada license can get tickets for only $22 total.
