I discovered pretty quickly that when you move to Las Vegas and say, “come visit me sometime”, people actually take you up on it fairly frequently. This is a destination place, sort of like living in Disney World but here you really do live in the midst of it all. And so they come and what do you do with them? There’s the casinos, the restaurants, the shows, golf and the shopping. That’s all great stuff but for those of us who live here, there’s so much more to this beautiful desert city than casinos, clubs and very late nights. In fact, I’m sure I’m not the only one who gets asked again and again, “so how often do you go to the casinos to gamble?”, “what clubs do you like best?”. For me the answers are very easy, I don’t gamble and I don’t stay up until the clubs open. My days of going out at 11pm are over and that’s perfectly okay with me. Do I enjoy going down to the Strip and walking around, having a great dinner outside at Mon Ami Gabon, you bet.
But watch what happens when you completely surprise people with the awesome beauty of Mt. Charleston. Any season. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Charleston,_Nevada Have you been there lately? I love driving people up and watching their faces as they leave the desert behind and enter a world of pine trees, fresh mountain air and beautiful homes throughout the mountainside. I’ve done it in a snow storm, caution here, I have a Volvo with Traction Control and good tires. Be careful going up in the snow. If its too heavy, you’ll need chains. But what a site, just an hour off the Strip. And dress for the weather, if its Winter, its really Winter on Mt. Charleston. And when you get up to the top, to the Lodge http://mtcharlestonlodge.com/, is another surprise. Sticking with Winter for a moment, it will be a Winter Wonderland. Cabins where you can stay and a wonderful lodge for a hot toddy, good food and a fire blazing in the middle of the large open room. Catch a football game and relax. I didn’t even mention skiing at Lee Canyon or taking the kids sledding http://www.skilasvegas.com/winter/index.html. I was focusing on a great place to take company – WOW them for an afternoon. You’ll be pretty Wowed yourself.
Lets say its Summer, 105 in Vegas and maybe 75-85 on the mountain. Sit outside at the Lodge, enjoy lunch, a cool beer, soft summer breezes and a magnificent view. There’s usually vendors set up outside selling Native American jewelry, etc. Bring the camera. Maybe do a hike first like we usually do. Check out Mary Jane Falls or Fletcher Canyon. Makes me feel like I’ve earned my beer and burger. Great hiking. Beginner to advanced. Don’t forget to also drive up to Lee Canyon where the ski lodge is – there’s beautiful hiking there too.

My favorite waitress at the Mt. Charleston Lodge is a woman named Debra. She’s friendly, efficient, been there a long time and gives great service. She’s there most of the time. Yes, I go up there alot. It’s a magical place for me. When I miss Connecticut, the Mt Charleston pine trees are a great reminder. Take a ride, Winter, Spring, Summer & Fall. You’ll be glad you did and your guests will keep saying, “I can’t believe this is Las Vegas”. It’s not, its Mt. Charleston, Nevada but close enough. Debbie Harris
