“Interview with Grandma Lee”

I had a chance to meet and interview Grandma Lee, finalist of the “America’s Got Talent” television show, following her show at the Bonkerz Comedy Club Showroom, inside the Palace Station. She recently appeared for the entire month of May and now has returned to star in the showroom for the summer until September 4.

SZ: “I watched you on television but you were so much better in person.”

Grandma Lee: “I can be a little dirtier.”

SZ: “It is a surprise when people see you, because you are not the typical grandma. I like when you pause for the laughs and make a face.”

GL: “Yes, I worked on my timing. I used to go too fast but had to slow down a lot. At first, I stumbled on the laugh lines and later I made faces when there was a pause.

SZ: I think you like to shock people.

GL: Yes, I do. I write my own routines. Most of my stuff is true, based on real experiences.

SZ: How you think about the subjects you joke about?

GL: I put it together, something happens every day, like my being in a shower bit. I say, oh, that’s a good joke for me to use, a new routine for the show.

SZ: The audience expects men to be dirty as comedians, but a woman, a 76 year old woman!

GL: I do not worry about what people think.

SZ: Today the comedians all use four letter words, it is routine.

GL: “I think people wish they could say what I say.

SZ: “You started your new career in comedy, at 63 years old, going on the road.”

GL: “I like to convince older people that they can live their dream, do what they want to do. Do not let age stop you.”

SZ: “Isn’t it hard, going on the road? Usually comedians appear 1-2-or-3 nights in each club.”

GL: “No, I like it. When I am home too long I get bored.

SZ: “You show everybody you are not ready for a rocking chair. People are retiring at your age or younger.”

GL: There is life ahead for seniors. Some people say they are going to take it easy when they are going to be 60. Live your dream, do what you want to do, do not let age stop you.

SZ: “That advice is good for everyone not only seniors. When you entered America’s Got Talent contest, did you think you had a chance?”

GL: I was on the “Last Comic Standing” a few years ago and made the regional finals. There was one spot open promised to someone else, then they called and told me to come back and be in their finale so I got a lot of publicity and a couple of years ago they picked the 10 best jokes of that show and I was #7. I wanted “America’s Got Talent” really bad.
